A shop grossing $400,000 a year rarely loses money on one big mistake. The margin drains out through small gaps: material tickets keyed twice, retainage booked as current receivables, T&M hours reconstructed from memory on Friday night. Accounting software for small electrical contractors has to close those gaps at the source, in the field where the work and the paperwork are created together. Phase coding splits a job into work packages instead of one lump sum. If you bid commercial work, the structure already exists in the spec book.
